Biography
I always loved movies. Comedies, dramas, westerns, war movies, it did not matter, I enjoyed story telling through film. In high school I knew I needed to learn more about camera work so I volunteered to make game films for my high school basketball team. I volunteered with the community cable programmer to expand my camera operation and live editing experience for area sports and community events. I was hooked.
I found the Bowling Green State University Film program through my Dad’s alumni magazine. While we are both BGSU graduates from the College of Arts & Sciences, we are very different. He is a Ph.D. scientist and I love to make documentaries.
Over spring break of my first year at BGSU I returned to my high school to put together a video to help the school’s levy that was on the May ballot. I was asked to bring the community into the school hallways to show them firsthand how overcrowded the school was and how important the levy was to maintain the excellence of my school. I used some film already shot by other students, my own shots, stop-action editing and imaginative music (Queen’s “Under Pressure” when a teacher needed to move her mobile desk through the crowded hallway between classes) to tell the story. The video was posted on the Levy campaign website and was shown at many community and school events prior to successful levy vote. Our local paper attributed the success of the levy to my impactful video. I learned the power of telling a story through my film.
I gained more experience working as a summer intern at WGTE, Toledo’s PBS affiliate. The summer of 2008 was a great time to intern at a television station as that was the beginning of the big switch to HD broadcasting. The WGTE staff allowed me to expand my work in editing, camera work (both station and remote), as well as really assisting in productions. I developed PBS promotional videos and worked on locally produced television shows such as Plugged In. One project, Undefeated: The Chuck Ealey Story, won an Emmy for feature length documentary.
As a follow up to my internship, I have continued to gain experience through WGTE. I was given the opportunity to deliver a short documentary to play between WTGE programming. In Video Voices: Harry Cummings, I told the story of a community organizer that uses an inner city boxing club to help the youth of Toledo. I was Producer, Editor and Director of Photography for this successful project that has now seen air time on WGTE.
BGSU also requested my talents and I produced a video for the Dean of Students entitled What Would You Do?, an ethics video shown to students with disciplinary problems.
Now that I have graduated with BA in Film Production and a minor in Telecommunications and Video Communication Technology, I am taking every opportunity provided to me to gain hands-on experience in my field. I have worked as camera operator on the service learning production, The Art of Learning, a 30-minute documentary to be aired on WBGU and WGTE, on Toledo School for the Arts. Most recently I have been the sound designer for the film Whitehorse Revelations, which will soon finish production and move to the post-production stage. I continue to work with WGTE, I have made promotional videos for local bands, and I am working with Docuality- a new startup film production company specializing in documentaries and reality TV shows. My goal is to gain as much film experience as possible so that I will be ready for when the right opportunities come along.
